Empathic humour is a marvellous way
To turn a rabid hawk into a gentle dove;
Replace destructive war with sport and play;
Convert dark hatred into splendid love.
Today in Israel there’s a female wit
Who calls herself “Shoteret Az-Oulai”,
Plucked from Ephraim Kishon’s amusing skit
About a cop who makes one laugh, not cry.
At demonstrations I was so amazed
To see her, dressed as clown combined with copper,
On all bestowing, whether cursed or praised,
A sticker-heart or flower or sweet gob-stopper.
For sure she is a kind, heroic soul;
And peace with Palestinians is her goal.
